- Malaria is most commonly transmitted through the bite of an infected Anopheles mosquito.
- Of the approximately 400 species of Anopheles throughout the world, only about 60 are vectors of malaria under natural conditions, some 30 of which are of major importance.
- There are more than 2500 species of mosquito, although only a minority feed on human blood.
- Only female mosquitoes drink blood, usually to fuel the production of eggs.
- Female mosquitoes bite usually between sunset and sunrise.
